Front door, security door and garage access

One key ring can hold a house key, a security-door key and a garage remote. They may all get you home, but changing one doesn't automatically change the others. Start by looking at the opening each one controls.

ONE USEFUL QUESTION AT A TIME.

Start with the door and the result you want

A security door in front of the main door can have a different lock and keyway. If you want both on one key, compatibility must be checked. If you want an old key cancelled, make sure both intended locks are included in the work.

The fault can also belong to just one layer. Say which door catches and whether its lock feels different open and closed. A bolt that moves freely until the door meets the frame gives a useful clue about fit. It doesn't prove the whole lock needs replacing.

Perhaps the locks work well, but an old visitor should no longer have access. That is a key-control question. Perhaps you have to lift a door to turn its key. That is an operating problem worth describing on its own.

You may need both addressed. Have the estimate identify each opening and the work proposed for it. Rekeying, repair and a new lock can solve different concerns; none should be an unexplained default for every door.

The overhead door and the door into the house

The interior door from the garage may have its own mechanical lock. Its key can be part of a home rekeying plan if the hardware allows it. The overhead door, opener and remote are a separate equipment question.

A remote that no longer gets a response isn't the same symptom as a door that travels unevenly. Describe what happens without repeatedly operating a damaged door. Leave springs, cables and other loaded parts alone.

The garage door repair page explains the useful observations. It also keeps the proposed repair separate from opening or changing the lock on the door into the home.

Keep the final check ordinary

Use each included key on the door where it belongs. Check the lock with that door closed and make sure the intended old key has the agreed result. If electronic controls are included, learn the appropriate backup method and who manages access.

For a rental home or common entrance, establish approval before changing hardware. If someone meets the work for an absent owner, settle permission and the key handover first. A clear door list helps everyone understand what has actually changed.
