The change is inside suitable hardware
Rekeying changes a lock so a different key operates it and the former key no longer does. It may let you keep the handles and lock hardware you like. The condition and type of lock have to be checked first.
It is useful to distinguish that result from fixing a fault. Rekeying alone doesn't correct a bolt catching on the frame, a loose handle or a damaged mechanism. If you need a key change and a repair, have both results listed clearly.
One key for a few doors? Ask about compatibility
Walk through the doors you want included. In a Sun City home, that could mean the main entrance, a separate security door and the door from the garage. Don't assume those locks already use the same kind of key.
Suitable compatible locks can sometimes be keyed alike. Others may need a separate key or a change of hardware to reach that result. Explain whether reducing the number of keys matters to you before parts are proposed.
Our front-door and garage guide helps make the door list. It also separates the mechanical door key from a garage remote, which is a different access question.
Decide who gets the new copies
Count the keys needed for the people you authorize, including any spare kept elsewhere. If someone will meet the work while the owner is away, agree that person's authority and how keys will be handed over.
A renter or business tenant should involve the owner or manager where required. Common entrances may sit outside the lock change being requested for an individual home or unit. Having one key on a ring doesn't settle who controls every door it opens.
Check every included lock
After rekeying, test the new keys on each opening covered by the job. Make sure the old key has the agreed result and that the door operates properly when it is closed. Keep the spare separate from the everyday keys.
Before work starts, the estimate should identify the locks, keys and any repair or replacement proposed alongside the rekey. A clear door list is more useful than a general instruction to change everything.
