What your locksmith estimate covers

Two prices can look far apart because they describe different results. One might include a part the other leaves out. Before comparing the numbers, make sure you are comparing the same job.

ONE USEFUL QUESTION AT A TIME.

For doors, name each opening

A request to rekey the house can mean one entrance to one person and several locks to another. List the front door, separate security door and garage-entry door you want included. Explain whether you want different keys, a repair or new hardware.

Ask what covers the visit and labor, which parts are proposed and how many keys are included. If compatible locks are to share a key, have that intended result clear. A repair to the door's fit should not be lost inside a vague reference to changing locks.

For a car, describe the finished key

Check the replacement part, any cutting and the electronic functions. The blade, starting recognition and remote buttons can be separate parts of the job. If you supply a part yourself, confirm that it can be used before assuming the quoted work will make it compatible.

A spare made while a key still works and a request after all keys are lost start differently. Include that detail when comparing a dealer option with a locksmith option. The car-key guide explains why it matters.

For a garage, separate the symptom and the part

Describe what the overhead door does and which control still works. Ask which fault the proposed repair addresses, which parts it includes and what will be checked afterward. A remote problem, opener response and uneven door movement shouldn't be treated as identical work.

Use only equipment information that is safely available. There is no need to climb or remove a cover to prepare an estimate conversation, and springs or cables are not adjustments to try yourself.

Agree how new findings will be handled

Some conditions become clear only when the hardware is examined. Ask what the initial estimate assumes and how any added work would be explained before approval. A changed scope should be a fresh decision you understand.

Keep the final check useful

Keep the invoice and any care information for the specific work. Test the agreed keys, doors or controls before treating the job as finished. If a warranty or other term matters to your decision, have it explained rather than assuming a particular period applies.
