You might use the door from the garage every day and the front door only when someone visits. Both can have working keys in other people's hands. A useful home-lock plan follows the way the house is used.

THE DETAILS HELP DEFINE THE WORK.

Start with a short door list

Include the front entrance, a separate security door, side doors and the door between the home and garage. Note which have their own keys. It is easy to change one lock and later discover an overlooked entrance still uses the old key.

If you want fewer keys, ask whether the existing locks are compatible before choosing replacements. Some suitable locks can be keyed alike. Different keyways, worn parts or other hardware may call for a different plan.

A missing house key doesn't establish that the lock is damaged. A lock that catches doesn't establish that the key needs changing. Those are separate concerns, and it helps to say which result matters to you.

When an old copy should stop working

After a move or a change in who visits the house, you may want control over the keys rather than new handles. Rekeying changes which key operates a suitable lock, often allowing sound hardware to stay.

Think about access for the people you choose to let in, including anyone checking the property while you are away. Agree who can authorize the work and who will receive the new keys. Knowing a relative or the address isn't the same as having the owner's permission.

If you rent, involve the landlord or manager before changing locks or fitting electronic hardware. A shared entrance may have a different responsible person from the door to your own home.

The door should close without a routine

Having to lift, pull or lean on a door can become a habit. Explain that habit. If the bolt moves freely with the door open but catches when it closes, the fit needs attention alongside the lock.

For a security door in front of the main door, identify which layer has the problem. A lock repair and an adjustment to how a door meets its frame are not automatically the same job. Our guide to the three openings keeps those questions separate.

Choose hardware for the actual entrance

An exposed entry and a shaded porch can give hardware different conditions to deal with. The specific product's exterior suitability, finish and care instructions matter. Avoid choosing a lock only by its appearance on a box.

Try the controls before deciding

For a keypad, include the backup way in and responsibility for batteries and codes. Let the people who will use the lock try its controls. A convenient lock should suit their everyday use as well as the door it is fitted to.
